About the Monitoring and Evaluation of the One WaSH National Programme of Ethiopia

The Government of Ethiopia is implementing the One WaSH National Programme (OWNP) to increase access to water, sanitation and hygiene (WaSH) facilities across the country.

With data on how the OWNP is progressing, the programme’s implementers can adjust interventions to make them more efficient and effective. To that end, the Ministry of Water, Irrigation and Electricity (MOWIE) is supporting the first fully operational monitoring and evaluation system of the OWNP.

For the first time, data from all four ministries working on WaSH – the Ministry of Water, Irrigation and Electricity (MOWIE), the Ministry of Health (MOH), the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development (MOFED) and the Ministry of Education (MOE) – will feed into one integrated monitoring and evaluation system. As a result, a comprehensive picture of progress towards One WaSH goals will emerge.

The system will help decision-makers at the federal, regional and Woreda levels make better decisions with regards to WaSH programming in Ethiopia. Lessons learned through the monitoring and evaluation process will also help other organisations and individuals design and implement more effective WaSH programmes, both in Ethiopia and abroad.
